Chapter 19

Surprisingly, I felt much better in the morning. Erik fussed over me, but he could tell I was better. I thought it was mostly because of Firestar. He made me drink medicine anyway, and I obliged because I knew we’d be busy. Sure enough, we met up with three different camps along the way, and Erik and I made our request that they join us. They all agreed to help. That evening, we sat down with Danny on a message mirror and relayed our information. Danny seemed relieved, which told me the news about Karin and Malcolm had bothered him too, especially when I told him my suspicions that this wasn’t a new partnership. We advised Nate where the DM would be of most use to guard the border, then hopped on Firestar and left. Though Firestar had to fly for a little while in the dark, he didn’t seem to mind the short distance, and Windsong was waiting to greet us.

“See? Didn’t get eaten by a wyvern, and didn’t drown in the mud.”

She sniffed me. “You smell strangely. Not a good strange.”

“The swamp was not fun. You would have hated every minute of it. Firestar sure did.”

“There is mud in my scales,” he griped.

“I’ll clean you tomorrow,” Erik promised. He looked at me. “Though I’m certain Windsong wouldn’t be such a big baby over it.”

Firestar growled and nipped Erik gently.

“See? You didn’t miss anything.” I rubbed Windsong’s neck. “Let me go wash, and I’ll tell you everything.”

With the news the DM was going to provide a watch and defensive line along the border, the mood at Icosagon improved. My mood improved considerably when Lizzie wrote to me and told me with many exclamation points that Ned Benya had finally proposed, and that she was very happy and assured me I had a spot in the wedding. She concluded the letter by saying that she would remain at the Academy for the year-long engagement so I could continue to write to her there.

Two weeks after the letter, Ned came himself to visit, Floyd escorting him in.

“Ned Benya.” I bowed to him. “Welcome back to Icosagon.”

He bowed back, a slight grin in his eyes. “I do hope that our meeting will go better than last time.”

“You aren’t here to propose to me, so I’d say your chances are considerably better than before.”

“I have discussed some things with your father, and he asked me to relay them to you.”

I couldn’t quite swallow the surprise. “My father?” I forced my expression back to neutral. “I see. One moment.” I whistled for the other Dragonriders. Moments later, they were on the floor to join us.

Ned began. “What you’re asking to prove is that Karin and Malcolm are joining forces with the Silons.”

“That is what they’ve done. And I’m certain it’s been going on a lot longer than we realize,” I said grimly.

“That may be so, but it’s what you can prove, and you can’t prove anything other than that the Silons escaped at the same time Karin and Malcolm did.
